Fiction? Nonfiction?

On a cold day, when the temperature is below freezing and a frosty wind howls around your house, is the perfect day to curl up by the warm, crackling fireplace and read a compelling book. Would you most likely be reading a work of fiction or nonfiction?

Truthfully, I would most likely be reading nonfiction. My favorite books are biographies or autobiographies written by people who have achieved something that is remarkable, which surpasses anything that people are able to think or imagine. Mountain Rain published by OMF is one of those. It is the biography of James O. Fraser who was a pioneer missionary to China in the early part of the twentieth century. After reading the book, please visit http://joshuaproject.net to learn the rest of the story. The Lisu are mentioned in the last few minutes of the video clip. May God be praised for His amazing work!

I also read nonfiction in the Christian Life category in order to stretch my faith or inspire me to grow in my walk with the Lord. Books on prayer catch my attention as well as other spiritual disciplines. Both Grace Walk by Steve McVey and The Insanity of God by Nik Ripken were excellent for exposing me to a new way of thinking.

So, when God spoke to me about writing a book, I naturally assumed it would be nonfiction. In Philippians 4:8 the passage teaches us what our minds should be filled with, and one of those things is, “Whatsoever is true…” I wanted to be known for speaking and sharing truth with those I met. But, actually I have to admit that God gave me a big imagination. And, I know that God can use everything for His glory. Plus, the Good News is shared in each book and I’m happy about that.

So, the Sky Blue trilogy is a work of fiction. And, I have to admit I enjoyed creating the characters and moving the story forward with each chapter. The Lord reminded me that the precious Japanese people I got to know and who shared their stories with me are His beloved. Their stories belong to them. They are not part of this book but they were in my heart when I wrote it.

To God be the glory!
